How various vaccine locations are preparing for increase in eligible patients at the end of March

March 15, 2021

In just two weeks, those with certain health conditions will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine in Wisconsin, starting March 29.

"It's going to be quite a rush," said Bushra Zaibak, COVID-19 vaccine clinic manager and an owner at Hayat Pharmacy.

Hayat Pharmacy opened up three vaccination dates for the end of March for those eligible for the vaccine starting March 29.

'Vaccine Hunters' group continues push for access to leftover vaccines in Wisconsin

March 15, 2021

Dr. Hashim Zaibak of Hayat Pharmacy says they’ve managed to avoid having many leftover vaccine doses by mixing fewer vaccines on an as-needed basis.

“It’s really difficult because if you mix 100 vaccines and only 50 people show up, then you’re left with 50 doses, then you have to find volunteers or find patients to get,” Zaibak said.

Zaibak said some people not yet eligible have successfully waited until the end of a workday for a walk-in vaccination left over - despite the low odds. However, staffers will always prioritize the people closest to eligible out of any waiting group.

Pharmacist: Verifying pre-existing conditions for vaccine 'a gray area'

March 11, 2021

Right now, Hayat uses licenses and work IDs to confirm if someone is eligible. Verifying medical conditions like being overweight or pregnant will be a different challenge.

"That’s still a little bit of a gray area," said Zaibak. "We’re still meeting and figuring out how we’re going to be able to determine this."

Zaibak says it will require trusting someone's word -- something he hopes people don't take advantage of.

Milwaukee will administer the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine at homeless shelters

March 11, 2021

The single dose required with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine makes it easier to administer to the homeless population as opposed to the double dose required with the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines

"This is obviously attractive for those at the shelter," Barrett said. "That's a place we think we can have a lot of positive impact throughout the community."

Meanwhile, Hayat Pharmacy announced it is holding walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinics at its south side location this week.

Online platforms hope to connect people with leftover COVID-19 vaccine doses

March 10, 2021

At the end of the day, some pharmacies and clinics may have leftover COVID-19 vaccines. State officials say those vaccines could be given to non-eligible groups if they must, in order to avoid waste. Now, a number of online platforms are hoping to connect people to those leftover doses.

Hayat Pharmacy says they often see people lining up at the end of their vaccine clinics, but that doesn’t mean everyone waiting gets one.

“They wait until the end of the day and they ask us, do you have any leftover vaccines?” said Hashim Zaibak, founder of Hayat Pharmacy.

Zaibak says his vaccine clinics screen people waiting at the end of the day, to see who is eligible.

Hayat Pharmacy, Hmong agency partner to provide COVID-19 vaccines

March 4, 2021

If there's one thing the coronavirus pandemic has shown us, it's the inequities of health outcomes in different populations in the United States. Health leaders are keenly aware of those disparities and work is being done to close the gaps in vaccinations.

Hayat Pharmacy, in collaboration with the Hmong American Friendship Association, is offering a walk-in, COVID-19 vaccination clinic at the Association’s offices at 3824 W. Vliet Street in Milwaukee.

Pharmacy helps fill COVID-19 vaccine void city can't

February 24, 2021

Dr. Hashim Zaibak, owner of Hayat Pharmacy, said because their locations are in underserved communities, where many of their customers don't have easy access to the internet, walk-in clinics are their best option for reaching as many people as possible.

"We're used to working with a population that has challenges with the internet or people who don't have smartphones. Many of our patients still have flip phones," Zaibak said. "Many of our patients are disabled, many of our patients don't speak English as a first language."

Manufacturing Delay Causes Shortage of High-Dose Flu Shot for Seniors

October 17, 2019

The CDC said Fluzone contains 4x the antigen of standard-dose flu vaccines. But manufacturing was delayed after the World Health Organization delayed deciding what flu strains to use in vaccines this year. "Because it's a new formula every year, manufacturing can be very complicated," Zaibak said. "If you're 65 or older and your doctor's office or pharmacy doesn't have the high-dose vaccine, don't wait to get it. It's better to have a normal dose vaccine on board versus having no vaccine at all".
